I am a professional Fine Artist and Teacher of Art and Design. I achieved a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting and Printmaking in Sheffield UK. Later I took a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Applied art and Design 14-19) at Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent and worked in Secondary schools in the UK for five years prior to emigrating to Canada.
I produce Abstract paintings in both Oil and Acrylic paint. I work through ideas from my watercolor sketches and snapshot photography of the landscape I hike and run through. I also enjoy exploring printmaking techniques and look forward to joining a print studio in the future. I fuse my physical experience of color with gestural mark making to create works that evoke rather than depict the landscape.
I am also interested in the human figure and have led workshops in figure drawing. I am currently working towards some collaborations with Yoga studios and Dance studios to capture the fluid movements of the human figure. I really am passionate about Dance. My current watercolor sketches of the human form are derived from muscle memory. I am excited about developing this avenue of my work which has been developing slowly alongside my interest in the landscape.
Since leaving the UK in 2010 I have lived in some contrasting landscapes and cultures, Ghana West Africa, and Haida Gwaii Archipelago. These shifting contexts have inevitably influenced my painting. Through these travels I have enjoyed learning from a wide variety of artists and craft makers.
I relocated to Sooke, BC with my husband and first child in December 2012. With my current focus on raising our family I have sought avenues locally to engage in Art communities and learn about new cultures. I am pleased to be a board member of The T’Sou-ke Arts group and The EMCS Society.
